Francis Collins Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection contains the paper materials of Francis Collins, created and accumulated during his tenure as the Director of the NHGRI (formerly the NCHGR) from 1993 to 2008. Many of the files in this collection predate Dr. Collins tenure, including files from first NHGRI Director James Watson and early planning meetings for what would become the Human Genome Project in the mid to late 1980s. This collection contains materials related to the Human Genome Project, including from before the project began in 1990, as well as the International HapMap Project, and other legacy NHGRI initiatives. It also includes materials related to the yearly operations of NHGRI, including planning meetings, budget information, congressional testimony, correspondence, international travel records, academic papers, meeting agendas and minutes, handwritten notes, drafts of manuscripts, and others.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Numerous items described in the finding aid have not been digitized and there is no guarantee that any specific file or folder can readily be able to be made available.
- Creation: 1985 - 2006

Language of Materials
Materials were left at the NHGRI upon Dr. Collins leaving the NHGRI in 2008 to eventually become the NIH Director in 2009. They were initially stored on location at the Office of the Director (OD) until being processed and scanned and moved into storage onsite at the NIH Campus, Building 31. Materials were then sent to NARA Federal Records Center at Suitland, Maryland for permanent storage. None of these materials are housed onsite on the NIH campus.
