 File — Box: FC-50, Folder: 23
Identifier: 6

Scope and Contents

The final draft of a Memorandum of Understanding between PE Corporation (NY) Through the Celera Genomics Group and National Cancer Institute A Participating Institute of the National Institutes of Health in June 2001. NIH scientists hoped to obtain access to the Celera mouse and human databases. In response, the NCI made arrangements that would enable individual PIs to purchase annual subscriptions. The agreement would allow researchers within the entire NIH system access to Celera's analytical tools and database products, including the fruit fly human, and mouse genomes. Documents also include correspondence with Francis Collins and Richard Klausner from NCI regarding the draft of this document, along with a message to the Scientific Directors and Principal Investigators at NIH from the Center for Cancer Research and a press release titled National Cancer Institute Subscribes to Celera Database. An article from Science also showed some of the controversy behind this agreement. Some NIH officials said they received complaints that academics using Celera's data have "scooped" intramural researchers on discoveries, but Richard Klausner replied that intramural scientists believed the Celera database had a lot of value to public data.
