Celera Coordination, 2000

 File — Box: FC-50, Folder: 21

Scope and Contents

Documents regarding some of the complications that come with the Celera and NHGRI collaborations. This includes the efforts of Celera and NHGRI to meet their submission goal to Science at the same time on July 15th. Francis also reached out to Craig Venter after genome centers such as St. Louis and Santa Cruz received e-mails from Celera's legal department about hosting their data on Celera's site. The genome centers contacted Francis out of concern, wanting some assurances that the source of the data was properly acknowledged on Celera's site. Followup queries to Celera had gone unattended, so Francis contacted Craig Venter directly. Documents also include controversies between the two groups due to quotes in the press. Correspondence between Francis Collins, Craig Venter, Kathy Hudson, and Larry Thompson after Larry Thompson was quoted in an AP article which claimed "It's difficult to assess whether Dr. Venter has done what he has said he has done unless one has access to the data. If you have to pay a million dollars for a subscription, that precludes a lot of people from having access." This quote angered Craig Venter as both Celera and NHGRI had made an agreement to stop criticizing each other to the press, by Larry Thompson was new to NHGRI, and Francis was out of town. Documents also include correspondence between Francis Collins and Claude Lenfant of NHLBI after Claude was troubled by what was going on with the review of the rat genome grants. Since Eric Green of NHGRI was one of the reviewers of the grants, and Celera was one of the applicants, Claude saw it as inappropriate.
