Celera, 10/99--2/00, 2000
Scope and Contents
Documents regarding the agreements of public information shared by HGP and Celera which includes the merging of the two data sets for one product. Many fundamental differences emerged over the span of their agreement that made this collaboration difficult. Bob Waterston drafted up a statement of issues to be negotiated with Celera after the December 29, 1999 meeting between Public HGP negotiators and Celera Genomics. This includes the timeline for the release of the joint product, Celera's interpretation of being the exclusive distributor of research, and the disagreement that HGP wanted the internet distribution to goto one or more non-commercial sites, while Celera wished any internet access to be exclusively through a Celera portal. Documents also include articles from publications such as Nature that feared Celera's intentions to monopolize human genome data. Tony White from Celera was unhappy with this article, and claimed on behalf of Craig Venter that Celera did not want to negotiate these terms, so Francis did not believe a further collaboration was possible. He then drafted a letter with Martin Bobrow and Harold Varmus claiming that unless Celera claimed the points they made in the letter were incorrect, a collaboration was not feasible.
