Ethics and the Human Genome Project, 1994-05-02T00:00:00+00:00
Scope and Contents
Dr Prosser Gifford introduces speakers - Patricia King, Eric Lander, Philip Kitcher. Patricia King talks about relationships between government and scientists, government controls purse strings; scientists pushed towards practical goals, applied science, scientists responsive to social issues, Human Genome Project exemplifies this; HGP identified risks and costs early and focus on ethical and legal consequences; Eric Lander speaks about the Human Genome Project being similar to the Federal Highway System; HGP as infrastructure for biology; geneticists use differences to find what is shared; systematic approach rather than guessing to find disease genes; history of discovery in genetics from Mendel through chromosomes, genetic linkage mapping, DNA, mapping a disease, finding disease genes (Cystic fibrosis); breast cancer gene and choice of treatment after genetic testing; Philip Kitcher speaks about Human Genome Project and state of current research; principle dangers and positives in coping with short term problems in trying to realize promise of Human Genome Project; genetic testing leading to better diagnosis; how reliable are tests at predicting future risk; is test worth it if nothing can be done

Conditions Governing Access
The majority of the materials within this finding aid have been digitized by the History of Genomics team. That being said, there are several instances where materials were either damaged or were in poor condition. In these cases we cannot guarantee the availability or accessibility of all materials.
Some materials may contain sensitive information or personally identifiable information (PII), in which case we cannot guarantee full unfettered access upon request. The History of Genomics Team will work to make a determination on a case by case basis as to the access of materials.
